1- This is little more than a celebration of the start of the stagnation of the Broadway musical lo these 30+ years ago. We’re supposed to appreciate the mountains of lyrics that they keep being shoveled into the same, uninspired sing-song music box, heralded by that last gasp of Broadway greatness, the “Phantom of the Opera”, as the requiem, and a reminder of the value of originality–punctuated only by occasional jukebox musicals (e.g. “Mamma Mia”) temporarily reviving pop music from it’s concurrent demise. The imagined clothes that the reigning Emperor of Broadway is wearing are impoverished and shabby.
After it was over, I hurried to my car to crank up some “Jesus Christ Superstar” to wash my brain out with the hope of Broadway pulling off its own resurrection. Then, cuing the “Music of the Night”, I was reminded that another version of the “Phantom of the Opera” is being filmed…with “modernization”…. Oh deliver me! Broadway is on life support. Andrew Lloyd Webber will be turning over in his grave while he’s still alive. We need the “Angel of Music” to get us back on track before we reach the “Point of no Return”.
2- For a musical, being okay is a great achievement in itself. Well I guess it had to stay true to the original source, broadway. I said okay but I do enjoy the movie. It features issues relevant today, and to me, like anxiety, fear of rejection, fear of connection, conforming to society, etc. Though things may seem to happen too fast sometimes, the pace recovers itself usually.
I can understand why some people don’t like musicals. Some people I know think they’re so smart for “figuring out” that things in musical doesn’t make sense. Personally, I see the musical scenes as a metaphor, a symbolic representation of the moment they’re in, played as a song with dances in it. It exists as an abstraction of the person’s mind, which could represent extreme euphoria, mania, melancholy, misery, you name it. If you can detach yourself from the reality you think you’re in when you’re watching the movie, then perhaps you can start to appreciate it just like any other art forms. If you can’t, then it will feel weird ofc. That’s why people can easily appreciate lion king but have problems with musicals featuring real people, they have a hard time detaching themselves from reality. If you ask me, these people need to smoke some weed for once. Get themselves some imagination, you know?
