Yes, this espionage action thriller appears to reveal too many weaknesses on the part of the poor female action figures. Yet perhaps in defiance of convention, The 355 offers up a more realistic portrait of how imperfect assassins and spies as human can be. The male audience is always looking for the ideal, superhero male who can dodge bullets and put down hundreds of antagonists like even Uma Thurman can in Kill Bill. Uncovering the layered plot of this movie reveals a real effort to upset the whole action thriller genre except for the underlying humanistic, compassionate element that usually occurs with most female driven movies. The action scenes are significantly different and offer up new, creative ways of looking at espionage and chase scenes. Even the ending of this movie has a soft not explosive touch for a change. The 355 is definitely a cut above most espionage movies including how seriously it takes it material with a nicely nuance dry humor element thrown in. This cerebral but invaluable ethical and emotional elemental perspective of this movie is a turn for the better in movie-making. Hopefully the female audience will come out in force to encourage the future transformation towards more relational, emotional, and existential hard-hitting action thrillers.
2- The latest Jessica Chastain action vehicle currently in release. Chastain plays a CIA operative out to recover a device that can supersede computer programming to do cataclysmic things (remotely firing missiles from jet fighters & the like) but when she travels to France to broker a deal w/a Columbian police officer, played by Edgar Ramirez (who co-starred w/Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty), who stumbled upon the device during a raid on a narco’s mansion, Chastain loses the item, her partner, played by Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier) & the cash being used for the purchase when a German operative, played by Diane Kruger, intervenes setting off a union of sorts of agents from different organizations (Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o an old running buddy of Chastain’s, Oscar winner Penelope Cruz as Ramirez’ fellow colleague & late in the game Fan Bingbing, she played Blink in X-Men: Days of Future Past, representing the criminal consortium which wants to purchase the device) to win the day. All of this is handled competently by co-writer/director Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Dark Phoenix) but he left out something integral to the proceedings so audiences could engage in this Fox Force Five mayhem; fun. You take something like Ocean’s 8 from a couple of years ago & that worked like gangbusters since mirth was the order of the day in that film’s success but here by treating all the cloak & dagger shenanigans as biblical scripture saps any energy being cultivated on screen leaving me in frozen shrug mode. Also starring Jason Flemyng as the main baddie.
